Artist's Comments

This was done as gift art for a friend of mine whom I visited last year in the states.

We went on holiday to Manitou Springs in Colorado in June 2008, to visit the Garden of the Gods, take the highest cog railway in the world to the top of Pikes' Peak, and visit some cliff dwellings. We were shadowed everywhere by a single one of these butterflies, and generally had a fantastic time. I bought myself a massive bone-tipped spear made by a guy called 'Straight Arrow'.

I then lost my Passport in Denver airport, caught my internal flight to Detroit anyway, realised that there was no British Embassy/Consul in Detroit and had to embark on an epic quest to Chicago to obtain an emergency passport so that I could get out of the country and return home. After much assistance from said good friend to get tickets and book a hotel room and being dropped off at Detroit train station, I was off on my own, wandering Michigan/Illinois with a 2m spear wrapped in bubble wrap.

Train to Chicago.
Taxi to British Consul.
Are told you need a Police Report.
Taxi to Police Station.
Are told they can't issue you as Report as the Passport was lost in Denver, outside their jurisdiction.
Nice Police lady issues one anyway with the loss in Chicago.
Taxi back to British Consul.
Charged £100 for emergency passport.
Charged £10 for a mugshot.
Taxi back to train station.
Strange cattle-car double decker train to Chicago O'Hare Airport station.
Bus to O'Hare monorail station.
Monorail to O'Hare Airport.
Taxi to hotel.
Insert some sleep here.
Taxi to Airport.
Wait over 9hrs for plane.
Plane to London Heathrow.
Walk to bus terminal.
Bus to Coventry.
Taxi home.

Moral of the story; good friends are worth their weight in paintings and KEEP PASSPORT STAPLED TO FOREHEAD AT ALL TIMES IN THE FUTURE.

Wow! That's quite a story! If i get to come to England i will be sure that passport is securely stapled!

This is really a great piece of work you have here! I love the Tiger Swallowtail! I have a digital painting of one i did for a class, though i have yet to paint one in oils. This is very well done!
